Tensions at Canal St Martin: young people climb on a bus and police intervention

Description : PARIS (May 28, 2026) — As early-season heatwaves affect Île-de-France, scenes of wild swimming and plunges from bridges have been observed in recent days along the Saint-Martin Canal, the Ourcq Canal, and the Villette basin. Despite a strict ban and intervention by law enforcement to evict offenders, the City of Paris and the authorities are reiterating the deadly dangers of these practices outside designated areas (opening planned for July 4). Bathers expose themselves to powerful suction currents linked to the operation of the locks and the water-level regulation maneuvers, to which are added the inherent risks of inland waterway navigation.
